FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a licence to use a UHF CB radio in Australia?
No. UHF CB radios operating on the 476–477.4125MHz band (80 channels) are covered by a class licence in Australia, meaning anyone can use one without applying for an individual licence, as long as you follow the standard usage rules (e.g. channel restrictions for emergency and repeater use).
What’s the difference between UHF CB and commercial/licensed radios?
UHF CB radios are licence-free and limited to the shared 80-channel CB band. Commercial/licensed radios operate on separate frequencies allocated specifically to a business, generally require an ACMA licence, and are a different product category. Everything we sell here is genuine UHF CB gear — no licence required.
What range will I actually get?
Advertised range figures (e.g. “up to 17km”) are based on open, flat terrain with no obstructions. Real-world range is affected by hills, buildings, trees and how the radio is carried — expect noticeably less in built-up or hilly areas. There’s no fixed guaranteed range for any UHF CB radio.
What’s the difference between 5W, 2W and 1W radios?
Higher wattage generally means longer range and better performance through obstructions, at the cost of shorter battery life per charge. 5W handhelds are the most common all-round choice; 1-2W radios are lighter and more compact, better suited to short-range, everyday use like campsite or event coordination.
Do all your radios come with a warranty?
Warranty length varies by brand and model — check the specifications table on each product page, which lists the manufacturer’s warranty period. If you have an issue with a faulty unit, get in touch via our Contact page.
What does “IP rating” mean, and is my radio waterproof?
An IP rating describes a radio’s resistance to dust and water — for example, IP67 means fully dust-tight and able to withstand temporary submersion. “Splashproof” is not the same as waterproof, and radios with no IP rating listed haven’t been tested or certified for water resistance at all. Check each product’s specification table for its exact rating before assuming it can handle rain, dust or submersion.
